Nickel’s Wounds Excerpt By Saranna DeWylde

He slid his arm around her waist. “You mean like playing chess in my penthouse?”
“Yes, exactly that.” She smiled even as her gut clenched, even though his touch caused pain to shoot through her spine. Katarina hated this part of the game.


She hated acting like she liked them.


She hated them getting to put their hands on her.


She hated the sound of their breathing in her ear.
She especially hated it if she had to let them kiss her.


It all took her back to that December night in Atlanta to her debutante ball when Ashley had torn her dress, broken her wrist, and ripped her innocence from her.


When Red Wolf operatives had held her down, she’d been able to shut it off. To disappear inside herself. But it had killed something in her, murdered it the same way she was going to murder them. Although, Tin had gotten a good start. He killed two of them, saved her, and protected her until she was strong again.


That was what comforted her. Her hatred really did keep her warm. That was what fueled a heat inside of her when Stanhope kissed her. She imagined chewing his face off, so her mouth opened under his and she forced herself to respond to him.


Katarina reminded herself that she wasn’t brittle, she wasn’t breakable. She was a goddamn Marine.


She was an Elite Ghost who’d risen from the ashes of her own death and she didn’t need saving.


It was her targets who needed saving.


And no one would come. No one would help them.


Just like no one helped her after Wellington Ashley.


“Shall we go up then, Miss Dupree?”
“Yes.”
He led her from the veranda down to a secret entrance. Of course he wouldn’t want to lead her back through the party where they’d be waylaid or worse, people would know they were going up to his penthouse.


But that was fine with her.


She didn’t need anyone asking why a dead woman was attending the gala.

EXCERPT

“Get it out! Get it out! Get it out!”

Amy was screaming the words over and over, hands held to either side of her face like Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream.”

There was a body on the floor at the far end of the table on my side. I heard doors sliding. I swung my head to look at the doors into the main hall.

“What on earth is . . .”

“Iga,” I yelled to be heard above Amy’s hysterics. “Get Amy and Madison out of here, now!”

I heard her rounding up the two Twomblys and taking them somewhere else. My attention was on the body on the floor.

A couple of steps closer and I could see what Amy was screaming about. There lay the display pedestal surrounded by mangled flowers and a porcelain vase in shards, some of which were resting in the blood on the floor as it bled into the water the flowers had been in. Despite knowing there had been an argument in here a short while before, despite the overturned furniture and broken vase that could have been knocked over for a very different reason than the one Amy gave us, even though Amy’s bloodwood crochet hook was protruding from Resie’s left eye, I knew with every shiver running through my soul that Amy hadn’t done this. And, since Resie wasn’t writhing in agony, I also knew she was dead.

Pearl R. Meaker did it again!
I felt so happy when I started reading this book, it was like a second date.
In Devil's Hook we meet again with the most delightful character of all times: Emory Crawford. And she's still a little prying, highly intuitive, extremely smart and ready to solve another mystery!! And what a Mystery!!
The story is fast paced, with new interesting characters, more witty dialogues, full of twists and turns and great amounts of mystery.
I'm hoping that we have more books with Emory!!

Initially writing fanfiction she soon tried original fiction at the encouragement of her regular readers.
