Rendered

BLURB

Ten years ago, Drian Becker underwent the Rendering, a humiliating body exam imposed upon the masses by her father, a commander in the Patriot Army. Being a high ranking official’s daughter, Drian thought she was safe from the practice—not so. Her father’s betrayal left her emotionally scarred and dishonored.

It’s now 2098. Drian hasn’t thought about the Rendering since she became leader of a rebel faction—mostly because she’s an expert at hiding her feelings behind a thick outer wall of badass attitude.

All that changes when Colvin Hinton walks into her camp. With his easy swagger and even easier demeanor, Colvin makes being a rebel look good enough to taste. But when Drian finds herself tangled in his charms she lets down her guard, giving an old enemy the chance to take her out once and for all.

If loving a man is this dangerous, would Drian have been better off remaining in the clutches of her father and living with the scars of being RENDERED?

EXCERPT

“What if I am trying to get you undressed? It’s only us here.” Taking a step closer to him, she touched the top button of his shirt. He didn’t protest when she opened each and every button and spread the cloth apart, exposing his chest.

Drian couldn’t help but stare. The ripped chest and stomach took her by surprise. She’d figured he was cut, but nothing like this. His smooth chest was defined by muscles in all the right places.

Then his hands were on her arms and he was pushing her back. Colvin was gentle but firm. Her eyes flew open to see him staring at her with a stern reprimand etched onto his face.
“You can have my shirt to cover up with, but that’s all. I’m not traveling with you so that either one of us can be distracted. I’m trying to get us to my people alive.”

Without a word she took the shirt and put it on. She shook off a chill and then gathered pine straw and leaves to cushion their bodies against the forest floor for the night. They didn’t say anything else as he built the fire and she waited for her clothes to dry.

For the past day Colvin had been anything but silent. For him to be so now almost made her a little sad. So her plan worked—she’d gotten to him. Drian had effectively turned this man away from her. Didn’t that deserve a victory cheer?

But for some reason the last thing she felt like was cheering. All she wanted was to curl into a ball and go to sleep. If she’d known her game would alienate him, would she still have done it? Sighing, she decided that yes, she would have. For it was better not to have loved at all, than to have loved and been burned.

MY REVIEW

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First I want to say that the cover of this book is Awesome!! When I saw it I was immediately drawn.
Now, for the review of the story.
I always find the time to read a good dystopian book and this is a very good one, it give us a very unique vision of a, I hope, scary future. I found it really heartbreaking how young girls are forced to this primitive ritual of Rendering and the oppressive dictatorship that rules this world. I must say, that the story is too short for my liking, but that's  because I wanted so much more!! The main characters are well developed, Drian and Colvin have more sexual chemistry than romantic and that works for me, because there's no time for romantic dinners and dating in a dystopian world.
The plot is full of action, intense moments, some sexy scenes, and talks on how much are we willing to lose for a change.
Highly recommended for Dystopian/Apocalyptic readers!!

    2. That is a good question. It happened quite by accident. A couple of friends wanted to write an anthology together. I'd been playing around with the idea of a masquerade party--I wanted a hero/heroine to have a mistaken identity moment--where, in the midst of the costumes and masks, who they think they're with isn't actually WHO they're with. Hope that's not too confusing.

I wanted to set the book during the Revolutionary War, but didn't have adequate time to research it. So, I decided to set the series in the future and create a government that forces people to dress from the past. I've always been a fan of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, so that's where some of the female subservience ideas in the book come from.

I guess what draws me is the chance to create my own world with my own rules and just the ability to let my imagination play. It's the same thing that I love about fantasy--you can pretty much create whatever you want as long as you abide by the rules of the world that you lay down.

  3. Enjoyed the excerpt. Not quite sure what the "rendering" entailed, but perhaps that was an intentional tease? A "humiliating body exam" could mean many things...
