Excerpt

from Chapter 20

In the dim green light, staring at the ceiling, I wax philosophically.

“Do you ever think what it would be like, Hawk?”

“What what would be like?”

“To be born of a sexual union instead coming from a factory?”

“Either way, we all roll out human beings,” he replies, “so it makes no difference to me.”

“And to give birth—do you ever think about what that would be like?”

“Can’t say that I have.”

“Do you ever have fantasies about making a baby the old fashioned way?” I ask.

“Yeah,” he says, playfully giving me a come hither look with a flick of his eyebrows. “All of the time.”

“I mean to be a parent—a mother or a father. Do you ever wonder if you’re missing out on something amazing?”

“I thought about it for like five minutes one time.”

“Everybody has to feel it,” I say, pointing to my heart. “The big hole right here—that ache that says you’re incomplete.”

“If people feel it, they don’t talk about it, because what’s the point?”

“The point is that having children and nurturing them has been the foundation of humanity since the beginning,” I say. “Try as they might, the geneticists can’t remove our deepest yearnings.”

“I suppose not. Nor can you suppress the longing for the truth.” Hawk’s voice becomes wistful. “Do you ever wonder if there is a greater power up there guiding our lives?”

“Like fate?”

“Like God.”

“The stories of the gods are just adult versions of fairytales.”

“Sometimes I pray to whatever is up there,” he confesses.

This surprises me. Such a big strong guy, believing in a childish fantasy. Now, I’m curious. “Which god do you pray to?”

“I don’t have a name for him,” Hawk confesses. “I just call him Commander-in-Chief.”

MY REVIEW
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Avant Nation took me on a thought-provoking ride into the near future...

The Author was able to create a fantastic tale, I'm amazed, she's giving us an excellent book, the plot is interesting, the description of this future is terrifying, the characters are complex, the dialogues and interactions between the characters are well written. Also, the idea of two worlds, one modified by the hand of science and the other like the one we are living now, is fascinating!

We live this type of dystopian story through the eyes of Clara, she's our "Compassionate" heroine, I really liked her, she's like an average teenager, but instead of worrying on what shoes to wear, she's questioning herself about more profound things. i enjoyed the relationship between Clara and Hawk, but unfortunately, I'll have to wait for the next book, and I will wait!!

Anxiously, very anxiously.

  3. Thank you for hosting and reviewing my book, Romorrow Fan Girl! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The release date is next week on the 19th. For all of you lovely readers out there, the book might bring up a few questions. Do you think the government, or anyone for that matter, has the right to manipulate the DNA of another person? What about parents who are trying to create a more intelligent, healthier or compliant child? When is it okay? When is it not? I'd love to know your thoughts!

  9. I like the Blurb. It's hard to think that with your genetic code, everything you do, including your death has been mapped out by the government. That's a scary thought. It sounds like a great read.
