RESTHAVEN BY ERIK THERME - BLURB BLITZ & REVIEW + GIVEAWAY

Resthaven
by Erik Therme

GENRE: YA suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB
The last thing Kaylee wants to do is participate in a childish scavenger hunt—especially inside the abandoned retirement home on the edge of town. When she finds a bruised, deaf boy hiding inside one of the rooms, she vows to lead him to safety . . . only to discover the front doors are now padlocked, and her friends are nowhere to be found. Kaylee is about to learn that not everything that goes ‘bump in the night’ is imaginary, and sometimes there are worse things to fear than ghosts.
EXCERPT
The dog was taller than our knees and its skin clung to its ribs, as if it hadn’t eaten in days. A half-chewed leash hung from its collar, and its ears and muzzle were pulled back. There was no question we were unwelcome guests.
“Kaylee?” Anna said.
The dog began to growl. We both took a step back.
“Do we run?” Anna rasped.
“Are you crazy?” I whispered fiercely. “We can’t outrun a dog.”
“What do we do?”
A sound rose and died in my throat. All I could see was the dog’s teeth. Last year I had been bitten by a stray in our neighborhood, and I still had the ankle scar to prove it.
The dog let out a wracking bark, startling us both back another step. My eyes skipped to Anna, then to the open doors on each side of us.
“We can hide inside the rooms,” I said, speaking low and fast. “When I count to three, run into the room beside you and slam the door.”
Anna’s grip on my wrist tightened. “I can’t—”
“You can,” I hissed. “If both of us go for opposite rooms, the dog won’t know which one to follow. That will confuse it and give us another second of time.”
“Another second?”
“Just get inside the room,” I said.
The dog lowered its head, shifting its muddy eyes from Anna to me. It knew who the threat was.
“One,” I whispered.
“Don’t make me do this,” Anna said.
My stomach knotted. “Two . . .”
The dog burst forward in a shambling run.
She snapped her head in his direction. "I beg your pardon."
Amusement raised Jaden's brow along with his coffee cup. His eyes sparkled over the rim, forcing her breath to catch in her chest.
What in the hell did he mean by that?
Sori covered the smile he was fighting by pretending to scratch his eye, but his amusement was still evident in his tone when he spoke. "What Jaden's asking is…what's your hurry?"
"I've already imposed quite a bit on your kindness."
"It's been one night."
Choosing to ignore Jaden's remark, she continued. "I don't want to take advantage of your hospitality. I'd like to find Lytell soon, it's been awhile and I missed him very much."
"Yeah?" The clank of Jaden's cup crashing down on its saucer once again caused her shoulders to jump. He leaned forward, pushing the bowl of sugar-covered strawberries toward her. "Care for some fruit, while you tell us what you miss most about him?"
She kept her focus on Sori. "Will Jaden be joining us as well?"
His brows pressed together as his glance slid in confusion over to Jaden then jumped back to her. "Ah--"
A sharp snapping of Jaden's fingers grabbed her attention. When she looked, he smirked. "No, I won't. But thanks for asking. Nice to know you'll miss me."
Kindise tried but failed to stop her mouth from falling open. Incensed by his insinuations in front of Sori.
"Ah, someone want to fill me in?" His glance ricocheted between them.
"There's nothing to tell." She got up, spun on her heels and marched from the kitchen muttering. "I'll be in my room. Let me know when you're ready to go."
Jaden held up the bowl of strawberries. "Sure you wouldn't like some sweetness before you go?"
EXCERPT
Parking by the Weatherford Hotel lifted my spirits. I was off duty and this might be fun. The third floor Zane Grey Ballroom was a popular watering hole for the locals in downtown Flagstaff. The Grey was misnamed since it had never been a ballroom, but always a beautiful bar full of stained glass and gleaming wood. Antique photos of the hotel from its heyday in the late 1890s hung on the walls. The warped old stairs creaked all the way to the third floor where convivial conversation and laughter drifted out over the smoky sounds of jazz. My worries drifted away, and I had a tingle of anticipation. Maybe the blind date and I would walk out of my desert of broken dreams together.
I scanned the crowd for Taylor. She waved at me from a table adjacent to the carved wood fireplace. She and Trace sat beside a tall man with jet black hair, sculpted short on the sides and longish on top. The men stood as I approached. My date had a warrior's face, a hawk nose balanced by high cheek bones and a chiseled jaw. Taylor reached over and grabbed my hand."Hey, you look great." She jerked her thumb toward the warrior. "This is Sam Tohee."
Sam's hand was warm and calloused, his fingers thick and hard as he clasped my own. A grin tugged at the edge of his generous mouth, and when his eyes held mine, it became a slow contagious smile that spread across his face.
LADLE TO THE GRAVE BY CONNIE ARCHER - BLURB BLITZ & REVIEW + GIVEAWAY
Ladle to the Grave
by Connie Archer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
By the Spoonful is Snowflake, Vermont’s most popular soup shop, but owner Lucky Jamieson doesn’t have any time to enjoy her success—she’s too busy trying to keep a lid on false accusations against her loved ones…
It’s almost May, and some of the local ladies have organized a pagan celebration in the woods to welcome spring. But the evening goes terribly wrong when one of the attendees winds up dead, apparently poisoned by an herbal concoction prepared by Lucky’s grandfather, Jack.
Lucky’s sure her grandfather could not have made such a tragic mistake. But before she can clear him of suspicion, her best friend, Sophie, is diverted from planning her wedding to By the Spoonful chef Sage DuBois when she finds a dead man floating in the creek on her property. Now it’s up to Lucky to get both Sophie and Jack out of hot water before a killer stirs up more trouble…
Recipes included!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

When Lucky reached Jack’s front porch, she was dismayed to see the windows dark.  She heard thumps and banging and Jack’s voice crying out. He was inside, somewhere in the dark.

Jack knew it was happening again. He couldn’t block out the screams. The boat was rising and falling in the sea. The water was purple with blood.  A hand reached up from the dark waters. Jack grasped it and held on with all his strength. Then a quick glimpse of a shark’s fin, and the man was gone. He was holding a disembodied arm. All around him were the cries of men being torn to pieces. Jack sobbed. He couldn’t help them, no matter how quick he was, no matter how strong. He wasn’t fast enough to save them.

Lucky pushed the door open and called Jack’s name.  His moans were louder now.  He had barricaded himself in the bathroom in an effort to control the memories. The sound of shattering glass came from within.  She hurried to the kitchen and grabbed a small knife from the wooden block next to the stove.  Just as she slid the edge of the blade into the doorframe, a heavy thud hit the door and Lucky fell back in shock, the knife falling from her hands. Her heart was racing. She pushed the knife into the doorjamb again and finally the lock released.

Jack was slumped on the floor in a small pool of blood.  Broken glass was everywhere.  He was lost in his nightmare.

“It’s okay now, Jack.  You’re home.  You’re safe.”

He looked into her eyes, confused. “Lucky?”

“You had a spell, but you’re okay now.”

Tears spilled down Jack’s face. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry about. Everything’s going to be all right now.” She prayed her words would make it true.
